Praying for Peace: A Prayer Guide for the National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2026

The first Thursday in May marks the National Day of Prayer. Since 1952, this day has been recognized as a day in which Americans, across faith traditions, pause “to turn to God in prayer and meditation”.

As part of this year’s observance, UMCL is inviting our faith community to include prayers for peace and justice as a part of their observance of the National Day of Prayer. Our heart aches as we recognize that our world is plagued by war and terror, violence and destruction that is inconsistent with Christ’s teaching. As people of faith we have a clear call to build peace with justice. In prayer together this day (and throughout the year!), we lift up our world and our leaders that God may inspire them to act with peace with justice. We pray for the peaceful settlement of all disputes. We pray for the day when there will be no more war and people will live together in peace and justice.*

We invite you to set aside a few minutes this National Day of Prayer on May 7 as we lift our voices collectively in prayer for peace and justice. To help, UMCL has compiled the set of prayer guides below to focus your time with the Lord. Guides are available in both English and Spanish.
